"Action, lust, danger, style and witty repartee, Orcutt's A Real Piece of Work is a work of art."* Critically acclaimed author Chris Orcutt introduces Dakota Stevens, a modern PI with the wit and grit of Spenser and the sleuthing skills of Sherlock Holmes.

In a thrill-ride of a mystery that leads from Manhattan to the Catskills to Washington, D.C., what begins as the simple recovery of a painting soon uncovers an international art scam, multiple murders, and a chilling secret hidden since WWII.

Introducing His Gorgeous and Formidable Associate, Svetlana Krüsh...

A Ukrainian-American chess champion with runway legs, predator eyes, and fluency in seven languages, Svetlana Krüsh is much more than a sexy sidekick, bringing worldly sophistication and a razor-sharp mind to their cases.

Forged and Stolen Art, Secret Identities and Murder...

New York City is in the grips of its worst blizzard since 1888 when an art dealer stumbles in from the storm and hires them to find a stolen painting. Dakota and Svetlana are soon neck-deep in a world of unstable artists, seductive gallery owners, mysterious collectors, deadly henchmen, and a stunning femme fatale.

A Fast-Paced and Intelligent Mystery in the Noir Tradition...

A Real Piece of Work is a pristinely well-written page-turner for readers who like a great story told with literary style.

A Real Piece of Work The Dakota Stevens Mysteries edition by Chris Orcutt Arts Photography eBooks

Dakota Stevens is a PI, assisted by his trusty sidekick??? Svetlana, a tall blonde chess champion.

During a NY snowstorm, a man staggers into their office and gives them ten thousand dollars to find a stolen painting.

From that beginning, they discover the world of art forgery. In this case, someone is scamming customers by selling them forgeries of stolen artwork that's missing. Before the truth comes out, their client disappears, Dakota gets involved with a hot artist, Svetlana is forced to let her estranged father (Russian mafia) send some of his goons to protect her, and there's violence and misdirection everywhere.

The writing and plotline are nice, the characterization not so much. I couldn't quite connect with the leading characters but that may be because I don't yet understand them. Maybe in later adventures, they'll become less caricature and more like real people.

Nice book.

A Real Piece of Work The Dakota Stevens Mysteries edition by Chris Orcutt Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

A flawed hero (cuts a few corners now and then); an assistant with a dubious past, but with a sideline talent; a femme fatale or two along the way and then the story begins. Enough red herrings and twists to keep you guessing who might have done it. The plot builds on the intriguing story of plundered WWII art, much of which may or may not have been recovered or secreted away. Chris Orcutt keeps us turning pages and guessing when the next shoe will fall...I enjoyed it and look forward to the next Dakota Stevens adventure. Don't be deterred by my 4-star rating...I only go 5-stars when I do NOT put the book down from start to finish...I did knock this one out in less than 24 hours.
This is a fantastic novel. The main character is flawed and totally believable. He has the tenacity of Jack Reacher, the intelligence of Savage and the resourcefulness of McGiver. His trusted side kick is the bomb! She is a genius and he recognizes that he completely needs her to be successful. What is the saying...behind every great man is a great woman?

It is very well written and is a real page turner. The end holds a surprise...and yet not quite a surprise. I suspect he is secretly in love with his assistant so that is why it wasn't quite a surprise for me. Looking forward to reading the next novel.
This is the first time I have taken the time to review a book for . I have been taking advantage of some of the free books lately - most by new authors. I have read perhaps 2 dozen of these free offerings, and admired the efforts of the newly printed authors, if not always admiring the finished product. I have not yet researched to see if Chris Orcutt has published prior to issuing this book, titled "A Real Piece of Work", but I must say that out of those 2 dozen free books that I have read, this book stands out far above all of the others. This book has the plot, storyline, writing skills, witty dialog, etc., of a seasoned author. I'd like to commend this author on writing a book that has compelled me to go and seek other works of his and pay money to purchase them.

Now before people dismiss my writing because I had gotten this book under the free program, please let me tell you that I have over 300 books on my Nook that were bought at full price, and well over 100 books on my , with most of them being paid for at full price. I do not know the methodology of offering their books for free - whether it is to introduce newly minted authors to the public, or to be able to claim higher sales figures, etc., but in my opinion, this program of free offerings works in my case by introducing me to authors that I would otherwise never have tried.

In closing, I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Chris Orcutt on a very well written book, and I am pleased to add a favorite author to my list.
I absolutely love this book. I'm a little in love with Dakota Stevens. Svetlana scares me; at the same time, I want to be her.

The characters are marvelous and the story, told in first person by Dakota Stevens, former FBI agent and now private investigator, is smart and funny. I was surprised at how sad I was for him at the end.

The only thing I predicted in advance was what would happen to Shay. Otherwise, there was one surprise after another and I totally didn't see what would happen in the end.

I really don't want to give away much. I'm going to be recommending this book to everyone I know because the author says the next Dakota Stevens novel won't be published until this one has sold 1000 copies - and I'm anxious to read the next installment in what will hopefully be a very successful series.

The price, at $4.99, is just right. Don't let the fact that this is Chris Orcutt's first novel put you off. This book is well-written and well told.
I bought this book based on other reader's reviews and they were spot on!!!! Great action, off the wall humor, a very twisted but intriguing case and a smorgasbord of characters. I couldn't put this book down. I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment. I'm hooked!!
